Street Hockey Player Equipment—Everything You Need to Play

Suiting up in street hockey equipment is a bit different than what’s required when you’re on the ice—mainly, there’s a lot less equipment involved. From street hockey basics to goalie gear, here’s everything you need to play street hockey.

The Basics

Whether you’re playing on an outdoor rink or in a gym, you’ll be running, quickly changing direction, and stopping and starting. That’s why we recommend wearing a comfortable pair of gym shoes and athletic shorts or pants.

While every player that registers with NHL STREET receives an official jersey before their first game, we also suggest purchasing a mouth guard. This small bit of plastic can make a big difference.

Street hockey stick

The most essential piece of street hockey equipment that every player needs is a high-quality street hockey stick that they can comfortably hold. Players who already own a hockey stick can use them in their NHL STREET games. But if they don’t have one—no problem. NHL STREET league operators always have extra sticks available.

Some players like to tape the knob—or the top—of their hockey stick to get a better grip, so you may want to have hockey tape on hand. If this is your first time using a street hockey stick, here’s a quick breakdown of how to hold it.

Goalie equipment

In hockey, goalies require their own equipment, separate from the other players. All NHL STREET teams have access to goalie equipment on site, so you’re covered come game time.

Here’s what you can expect to wear as a goalie to help keep you safe and make all the saves:

• Leg pads: Think of leg pads as two fluffy pillows strapped to your legs (usually by a plastic clip or Velcro). They give you a better chance at successfully blocking shots down low.
• Chest pads: Chest pads protect a goalie’s midsection—just like a catcher in baseball or softball. It loops over your head and is buckled around your waist to stay in position.
• Glove: The glove hand is used to catch the ball. And the blocker hand allows the goalie to hold their stick while swatting down incoming shots.
• Mask: Lastly, a mask protects the goalie from being hit, while also providing a clear line of vision of the play.
